Teenage Drivers

Here at CU-ICAR, we understand that teenage drivers can be new and inexperienced, however, we prioritize safety above all else. There are a variety of resources and tips for teens to practice safe driving and maintain positive habits on the road. We want to ensure that all teenage drivers have the knowledge and tools that they need to be successful and safe on the roads.

Important Risk Factors for Teen Drivers

Inexperience

Teenage drivers often do not have much experience on the road compared to older drivers. Teens are more likely to commit fatal errors due to this inexperience.

Substance And Alcohol Use

Using drugs and/or alcohol before operating a motor vehicle is extremely dangerous, and greatly increases the crash rate among both teenagers and drivers ages 20 and older. Even common prescription medications can compromise driving ability.

Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is especially dangerous for inexperienced drivers. Texting and driving, for example, is a practice that can lead to an accident and potential fatality.

Speeding And Improper Seatbelt Usage

Teens, and especially teen males, are more likely to speed and allow shorter distance between cars. Teens are also prone to not use their seatbelt. Teens who do not practice safe driving significantly increase their crash death risk.

What can Teens Do?

Teens have a responsibility to drive safely and follow the rules of the road.  All teens should become aware of the laws and regulations that govern driving, as well as the consequences of not adhering to them. Below are some tips to help teens drive safely.
